All signs point to the lifters.

What grade oil do you run?

I had an old 202 in a VK, swapped out with a dead 3.3, after I did the swap I did an oil change. Before the change it ran sweet, put in some 20w-50 and the first drive after exiting the motorway and coming to a stop the oil pressure warning light came on at idle. I chucked in a bottle of Moreys oil stabilizer and drove it like that for another few years. Engine wasn't terribly noisy either.

I'm confused, you lost oil pressure with 20w-50? Also 202 and 3.3 are the same thing? I put in new lifters thinking it might be the old lifters. Its currently got penrite hpr30 full zinc 20w-50.

New oil killed oil pressure, the stuff that came out was thick as ****, so me been nice almost killed the motor but it ran like that for years. 202 was a 9 port from a HQ or WB ute, 3.3 was the 12 port I believe but yes, the same thing basically. Those old motors were tough as ****.

Oh ok I see. Well I have a 3.3 then.
Interesting, everything I have seen so far regarding oil pressure seems to suggest thicker would increase pressure.

Yes but pressure isn't the only consideration as pressure is really just a measure of restriction to flow, pressure is easy to measure where as flow isn't. Pressure is also measured at the point where the oil enters the block after the pump/filter and not where the volume or pressure is most critical. Lifters have the smallest orifices in the engine so thick oils may not get into the lifter and cause issues. Newer lifters sometimes come with oil grade recommendations of no more that 40w but an old school style .841" FT style lifter used in these engines it shouldn't matter.

On the block, left hand side front is the engine size.

There are some differences between the 3.3 and 202's, but for the purpose of your issue, the lifters/oil pump/rocker gear/pushrods/camshaft are all identical inbetween the 2

Yeah, it's got the 3.3 stamp. It's a blue 12 port. I just didn't realise there was a difference. Still learning haha.

20w-50 should be fine.

Just remembered that hpr30 is actually 20w-60. But the problem started before that when I was using 20w50. I just changed it to the hpr to see if it would help. Also for the zinc.
