What has been done to the car previous to this fault?

How long have you had it?

An 08 could have a four speed gearbox and someone have put a gear selector from a 5 speed in it? The four speed doesn’t have active select.

What model is it?

Have you tried to push the screen in. On the series 1, the screen can come loose. There’s threads about that

If pulling the fuse for a long time has failed, it will required a high end scan tool like a Tech2 to start poking around the cars network to find what is not talking to other network modules and why.

What model is it? As in, Omega? SV6? SS? Calais?

I’d be looking to change the gear selector.
Find one for the 5L40e (your gearbox) as they were also used in 6 speed equipped cars after 2009.

There is two separate issues here.
Solve the data mismatch first. That can only be done with a high end bidirectional scan tool. The technician will find which module in the network is causing problems.

Then replace the shifter assembly to resolve the Active Select problem.
