  • Not sure what you mean by "use a rubber type seal over a wick seal". If you mean, can you use a rubber type seal (neoprene actually, similar to the rear main seals used in the V6 Commodores) instead of a rope/wick seal, then yes it is possible. However, the jury is really out on how effective they are in the long term. My 383 VS Calais had its rope seal replaced recently with a neoprene seal and it hasn't cured an oil leak that appears to be coming from the rear main. By contrast, my wife's VS Clubsport had its leaking rear main replaced under warranty with a rope/wick seal and it hasn't leaked in 200,000 kms. As you can tell by the installation video (if you have had a chance to view it), you really need to have it replaced by a professional that is experienced in replacing these seals.
