Well that’s your problem then if you’ve been using a 30. A 30 weight is too thin IMO for an older engine and will burn a considerable amount of oil.

I know that was the case with my old SV6 which is why I changed it over to a 40 weight oil once it had about 150,000kms or so on it.

Yes.

Viscosity is the nerd term for thickness.
Well I'll admit I was mistaken and misunderstood what I saw on YouTube from the Amsoil bloke . I'll still clarify with my mech. But looking at the vid Fu posted and my misunderstanding of terms that mean the same thing but just in a fancier way.

Plus the embarrassing moment where I thought the 5w in my shed was a 40 and not a 30. Been a good discussion and at the end of the day I learnt something.

Different weights are different formulas. Oil weight is determined by bearing tolerances and different tolerances are different use cases. Stock engines tend to be tight, high performance tends to be loose. More film is less heat and counters expansion. Over time the bearings will wear and those tolerances will increase suggesting upping the weight

Detergents, shearing additives, dispersant and even carbon atoms per molecule can effect how the oil behaves over time. I'd wager your increased usage of one over another had nothing to do with the cold start rating and everything to do with the formula used to achieve that rating

He sort of admitted that the oil was actually 5W-30, not 5W-40, that was increasing the consumption. So, he was comparing 5W-30 with 10W-40

Just use Penrite 5W-40 and all will be fine.

Thanks to @Pollushon, @Jeda, @Fu Manchu @chrisp, @J_D 2.0 for providing a good discussion without needing to use snearing remarks as some are in the habit of doing in some of my threads. It makes for a useful debate and helps people to learn something.

Good thing about the 5w Pen, because it seems to be the most commonly used grade now it does come on decent specials.

Ten Tenths is the real good gear. Who has that on sale? Not going to buy it but I'm keen to see the price.

You're a top bloke Losh, I'm not sure any of the regulars want anything other than to spread good info to help us love our beasts more
Some would disagree, and seem to like to hang **** on me at any chance they can.
