Hi all, looking for some help with an issue that I’m having with my V8 trimatic, it’s in a VH commodore. Trans has new filter, pan gasket, selector seal replaced, new fluid, new dipstick etc.. I noticed transmission fluid being flicked back over the underside of the car everywhere. It seems to start leaking once its been running for about 15-20 minutes. I slid a clear tube over the breather and angle it down the side of the trans to help determine that it is only the breather leaking and it definitely is.
I don’t have a trans cooler, I only have the trans lines running to the radiator.
Im hoping that someone has encountered this issue in the past and resolved it, Im tired of the mess it creates and the dreaded clean up.
cheers, any advice is appreciated.

Has it been overfilled.
I had an auto gearbox shop overfill a VP years ago and it dropped fluid until it got down to the correct ? level.
Of course they stood there, checked the level, and said nothing is wrong.
No guesses as to what my reply was.
I also remember a problem with a valve on the side of a trimatic which also caused problems with the box but too long ago.

Cheers for the reply, we haven’t overfilled it, checked the dipstick multiple times and kept it around half to 3/4 on the cross hatch.
I’m Unsure about the valve, the transmission seems to select all gears smoothly and also changes gear smoothly while driving.

Was the new dip stick without a doubt the correct length ?? and you are checking the fluid level withing 20 seconds of turning off the engine ??
and the box/engine is at running temp ??

I wonder if the radiator has died internally and is pressurising the box ??
Of course that should show oil in coolant and coolant in oil.

I purchased an aeroflow flexible dipstick with 2x O rings. It required exactly 15mm cut off of it to suit trimatic, which I did correctly. Then I had to also linish some of the hex at the bottom of the dipstick fitting as it wouldn’t seat correctly because of the lump on the trans next to the dipstick port hole.
The radiator is new and there doesn’t appear to be contamination of trans fluid.
I am getting the temperature up when checking the level but I am checking it whilst still running, not turned off.
If the level is being checked while still running, will this cause potential overfilling?
The current level right now whilst cold is past the full mark.

Yea when cold and not running the level will be higher cause it drains down when not running.
Checking whilst running is fine but probably not as good as when not running straight after turning off.

I thought it was the other way round?
When cold reads low. When heated up the oil expands, & level goes up?

No I believe the fluid runs down from the convertor.
Just like your engine the oil level will be higher when cold cause the oil has run down from the rockers etc etc

I totally appreciate the replies from all.
Are there any trans specialists that can shed any light… could this be from over filling or a pressure regulator that is faulty..
looking for some sort of guidance..
Cheers
