I think the VY has a 24mm sump plug (my VX does).

I don't know why Holden didn't just make a plug with a 1/2" drive socket hole instead. Much more fool proof and strong.

Have you tried heating the sump bolt area up with a heat gun and then hitting on a socket that's a tad too small? It might need some grinding of the plug to get the smaller socket on.

Thanks everybody for your replies I dont have access to a welder so I will try what rambunctious suggested and use a plumbers footprint (had to google it first). Also try heat gun around the sump. No way in hell I'm trying a blow torch, there are already too many fires ATM.

Heat guns work really well. I had to use one on my stuck balancer and it worked a treat.

Not doubting you, well actually I am, but trying to be kind at the same time;)
but laying under a car does sometimes give some people the wrong perspective as to direction of do/undo.
