In NZ we have an excellent product called Blackguard, which leaves a primered surface ready for painting. Used it under a Hilux and it was perfect.

Closest thing in Aus I could find is Plus Rust Converter and Primer. <-- Store Finder at that link.

Basically if it has been around for more than 2 decades and is good enough that the oil industry uses it on offshore rigs, I'll try it on my vehicle.

Deoxidine is the best imo. With most rust converters you have to wipe it off with a wet rag, which I find ironic. It turns the rust black and the metal and slight blue colour. You can prime and paint over it. Like all ferrous metals you should etch prime it before 2pak priming to promote adhesion and prevent corrosion.
