What’s the best type to go for?

Aeroflow do them with straight sides. No seal on the end. Domed on one end as well. Why?

Then I see there are tapered ones

Then of the tapered ones, some have a seal at each end and some don’t. Why?

All seem to have the thread in the end to help install and remove.

What would you recommend and from who?

not sure thought they would all do the same job, unless some are for allowing some thru if say a blockage happens or they are a press in fit, id prob get the one with taper and seal each end, will be fun to fit tho

I like the look of the taper type. Oil flow around 90 degree corners with sharp edges reduces flow, the taper might help mitigate that a little bit.

If you were real keen, you could use a bur with a long shaft and round of the inside corners of the oil galleries where they do the 90° turn (reaching in where the barbel goes).

I found a VCM one that has a deeper end. (That’s what she said) and a seal on the end and the head…
However I think that’s great on cars that might do some strip work or track days regularly. More high end applications.
This will be road and off road (not radical off road).

I take it the second seal ensures nothing bypasses the filter. However in a situation where that might happen, I’d rather some dirty oil than no oil to get through. Would that sound fair?

Filters have bypass valves, if the pressure differential over the filter inlet/outlet gets to much the filter will bypass. Interestingly, this also happens when the oil is cold, when in reality you need maximum filtration (as the **** settles in the bottom of the oil pan as the oil cools and this then becomes the first oil sucked back into the engine on a cold start).

Looking at the LS motors, the bypass is built into the oil filter housing.

Why did GM not have a seal on both ends?

I expect it will be to avoid the possibility of an O-ring becoming damaged during assembly by any sharp edges at the junction of the oil galleries .
Could end up with another source of warranty claims if shards of O-rings end up blocking a gallery to a bearing.
