So I noticed recently that my auto Evoke when reversing into my driveway from a standstill will rev out when faced with the resistance of driveway curb lip. If it’s a rolling start then not an issue and will reverse up the incline. Goes perfectly in drive with no other issues. Car has done 147k, had a transmission service completed about 15k ago and I also do a fair bit of towing. My first thought was the torque converter however keen to hear from the resident experts or anyone else who has had a similar issue.
Cheers

When this happens, have you tried putting into drive. But then back into reverse to find it working? Sounds strange, but my colorado did that. Holden replaced torque convertor under warranty and all good afyer that.

Well usually I do put it into drive to move forward before trying again but with a little run up instead of standstill. No issue backing up a trailer load once it’s moving.

Update - the issue got worse on the weekend and only had limited reversing capability. Took it to a Transmission specialist yesterday and am looking at a full transmission rebuild. Not a cheap exercise. Apparently reverse gear components and gears are worn, torque converter requires replacement. Will get the car back by Friday.

If you think to ask the rebuilder, can you get them to take some guesses as to the cause?

They did tell me, can’t remember the exact specifics but he mentioned some rings and gears that have worn down. I’ll get some more specifics when I pick it up.

That would be appreciated! :)

Although I'm thinking less "technical" and more "behavioural" ... eg. is there something the previous owner or yourself could've done to avoid this, for example (or is it just "this happens occasionally not much you can do about it") ... and hence which others can learn from.

Good question. I am the second owner, it was a ex Gov car that had only done 68k when I got it. It now has 147k. I do a lot of towing on the weekends and the mechanic said that this would have certainly contributed to the premature wear of those components.

I’d be interested in hearing both behavioural and technical issues of what went wrong. Maybe even some pics of the worn parts (which I always as to get back just because).

Also curious if you run an extra transmission oil cooler that sits in front of the engine coolant radiator and whether you’ve only had the one transmission fluid change?

And curious what the rebuild ballpark costs are as compared to a new (old stock) 6l80 + TC at about $7k.

To answer some of your questions: no oil cooler installed. Transmission was serviced about 20k ago which did make the transmission smoother at the time. Rebuild cost is $4800 which includes a new torque converter
