Dear Members,

I am looking at doing a Transmission Service on my 2006 VZ Adventra with a 5L40e, as that hasn’t been done while I have owned it,

I have done a few enquiries for the service kits, and the question has been asked, does it have a shallow or deep pan ?
My question is just, would it be a Shallow or Deep Pan
RTK65 (shallow pan)
Or
RTK130 (deep pan)
Looking at the actual pan, it does look fairly deep, not that I have seen a shallow one.
Is there a particular model#/batch of these transmissions that will indicate which type of pan it has,
is there a number on the trans that will indicate which is the correct kit ?,
As I haven’t clean it up as yet,

Or does someone know the external measurement of the pan depth from the flange (where the bolt go) to the bottom of the pan ?

For the older 4L60e's if they were fitted with a deep pan it was normally stamped on the dip stick. Maybe they did the same for the 5L40e?

Yes, the L67 VY Trans does say deep pan on the dip stick,

But GM in their wisdom, didn’t install a dip stick on the 5L40e transmissions
.

May need to get under there with a can of cheap degreaser or similar to check for any markings/indications..
As it’s a little muddy under there from the 2 PO’s.

I got my nose under the Adventra for ANOTHER issue (another story)
And checked the Trans sump/pan,
And it looks like it’s a shallow sump/pan on my 5L40e.
I did a bit of further homework and seen a couple of transmissions and shallow sump and deep sump are quite different.

The depth of the pan on my 5L40e
(on the outside from the bolt face to the bottom of the pan) is approx 50mm.

For the record, it would be good if someone had a 5L40e with a deep sump could be able to measure it ,
(from the bolt head face to the bottom of the sump/pan, so by measuring it, it will be an easy guide for the purchase for correct kit.

Can you get a deep pan for it and then get the kit for deep pan?

I mentioned deep because all the 8’s have the deep pan on the 4speeds, completely forgetting about the 5speeds.

I first thought it was a deep pan, so I went to order the kit,
But then thought about the pan on the VY as that is a deep pan, and then had a look at for a comparison,
Then looked on the web a bit more, and figured most likely a shallow so it won’t hang to low and get damaged.
