I should have reported back earlier. The problem was the water pump. There was a very minor leak on the shaft seal which wasn't noticable. I had a new pump ready to go on as I had replaced the idler pulleys and had noticed the pump had play in the bearings. New water pump, no water loss. :)

Except they quote the wrong belt size; Serp. 6PK2830. See page 91 of the catalogue. One possible explanation is perhaps the idler pullies they also quote are a slightly different size from original thus requiring a 15mm longer belt.
