    Brake failure lost caliper bolt

If you go back to the very start all I did was explain what had happened. No anger just relating the facts. My anger started when accused of having poor hearing and/or ignoring that and not feeling/hearing any grinding etc. It continued with idiotic comments on my modifications or my tyre...

    Brake failure lost caliper bolt

From the report: "As the process is self-exciting it is likely to have happened very quickly and given very little warning." This explains my not hearing or feeling anything prior to the failure. A couple of you sure jumped on me for that. I always apologize if I err in a statement. Not holding...

I appreciate this rare on this page worthwhile information. It is all in hand. Cheers.

    Brake failure lost caliper bolt

And I was not insulted by uninformed V6 Commodore drivers and you referring to my ego? A one way street it would appear here. There are many here that would not be pleased if you denied them the opportunity to follow this saga to its conclusion. I have submitted my claim to Tim Slako's West...

    Brake failure lost caliper bolt

So I have received the engineering report confirming my diagnoses as to why my VZ Ute had a massive brake / suspension failure. Nothing to do with my hearing, or tyres, or excessive modifications, or the rest of the idiotic comments by members of this forum which should be called 'Just...

    caliper bolts

Harrop is selling me a single caliper, they are horrified at the result of the installation. I removed the good caliper to paint it as the new one coming will also need paint. I set the torque wrench to 20 ft-lb to test the installation torque while removing which should be 80 ft-lb. The torque...

    caliper bolts

And why is that? I took the pic of the undamaged tyre. Note the other 'expert' said "tyres" plural so I took a pic of the left tyre. I now show you the right tyre with the scrub damage and the wear marker still not flush with the tread. You are calling me a liar. I call you a total fwit and...

    caliper bolts

Yet another nameless, clueless 'contributor' shooting the messenger. If the top caliper bolt had been left out the ute wouldn't have made it out of the workshop as the first brake application would put the caliper hard against the wheel. I have ordered a professional engineer's report. He looked...

    caliper bolts

Again, which bolt was it? Depending on the caliper position one bolt out will mean the caliper forced into the wheel. The other bolt out will not.

    caliper bolts

So you are implying I have been untruthful as to my level of driving aggression? What is heavily modified? bigger engine? transmission swap? Kaaz diff? brake upgrade? Again, the aspersions are laid at me and my vehicle. You failed to get that it was the top bolt that came out. If it had been the...

Great advise, It is not the money, this guy could have killed me and/or others.

    caliper bolts

Depends which bolt fell out. If my lower bolt had fallen out there would have been no damage as the caliper would not have been pushed into the wheel.

Why do you include an idiotic attempt at humor by Reaper;2738178 in everything you post??

    caliper bolts

A 255x40- 17 front tyre is 1.997 m in circumference. At 100kph that front wheel rotates at 833rpm. So in the 10 minutes I was driving before failure it would have rotated 8,333 times or something less depending on when the caliper bolt fell out. So even at 5 minutes before the bolt fell out we...

    caliper bolts

I was offended as you are yet another who assumes that I should have heard or felt it earlier when so far none of you have lost a caliper bolt resulting in such damage. How do you folks know that the alloy of a caliper melting against a wheel will make any noticeable noise over wind noise...
  20. W

    caliper bolts

There is no wear on the wheel, just a layer of melted caliper alloy. I take nothing serious from someone who can't spell 'heard'. Have you had a caliper bolt fall out?

    caliper bolts

Moderator, how do I stop anymore posts on this thread? I said it the way it happened yet I am abused for not hearing or feeling anything. There has been some logical and helpful input but because of a couple of tossers, a fat lot of good this group has been.

Look at your Mickey Mouse and read. Where have I claimed to be a professional mechanic? Mechanical Engineers design, they are not mechanics. Why do these threads always end up abusing the thread starter?

So again. I heard NOTHING or felt NOTHING. Again, stay off this thread you are not helpful at all.

I object. How could I have possibly contributed? Like I said I heard NOTHING until a second or so before it dropped on the highway. Please stay out of this thread.

Nope, the hole is threaded to the larger of the 2 sizes I saw at the Commodore wreckers.

    caliper bolts

Yup, I saw the mark at 8 but if you blow it up the thin edge is still intact. When I removed the wheel at home the caliper was actually stuck to the rim or welded on. Where I pulled it off it left a raised strip of ally which you can see on the wheel pic at 2. When I move the caliper in the...

    caliper bolts

Sorry I cannot find any edge damage to any of the wheel spokes. In clock notation which spoke in the image below do you see it? From the laid on aluminium in the wheel I can't see that the caliper hit anything, it just stayed rubbing in the same line as the wheel. It just welded itself on and...

    caliper bolts

The 3 failures you refer to would have occurred almost simultaneously The 2 bolts off the strut were in place but their mount broken off. I removed the bolts and found the holes elongated. So there had been movement there as well. The wheel spokes are fine, the caliper welded itself into the rim...

    caliper bolts

I have had the car for 17 years from 20,000km. It has never been in an accident. The whole rotating part now including the caliper when locked up would put an extreme instantaneous rotating force on the suspension components. I am happy with all the input however I see no reason to put blame on...

    caliper bolts

I thought the same but there is a big difference in the shock loading to the suspension of a caliper wedge locking the wheel instantly and nailing the brakes hard. The guarantee should apply to the incorrect installation of the caliper. I will make sure the engineer's report looks for cracking...

    caliper bolts

The calipers were installed over a year ago but they were still trying to get the electronics to work with the auto to Tremec conversion (another story that got pulled) I put on less than 1000km before the failure. No, I did not hear a thing until just before the lock up. The bolt hole for the...

    caliper bolts

I would agree with you, as after having the broken bits inspected it was clear on all the faces there had been movement. The two strut bolt holes were elongated. Personally I would Loctite as if torqued incorrectly there is some protection no? Probably helps remembering to use the torque wrench too.

    caliper bolts

My last post was removed because I named the installer of my new Harrop calipers on my VZ Ute. I had better not name him this time! I was driving along at 100kph the other day at 6am on an empty Old Coast Road south of Dawesville when the right front corner dropped on the ground. A big effort...
