    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

How long should it take to pump up a fully bled down lifter?
  2. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Yeah I am too hahaha. But the test I did gives me more confidence because they held pressure over night. They should still pump up reasonably fast if they bleed down anyway I would think. Unless they are bleeding as fast as they are filling. Not sure how they would ever hold pressure at all if...

Yeah, it's just a cheapo one though. According to the gauge it's got plenty and is also steady and consistent. So I had ruled out the pump for that reason but I don't know now what else it could be. The lifters do fill up, just not enough to stay nice and firm it seems.

I pulled out the current noisy/soft lifters and manually filled them with oil by hand so they were stiff. Put them back in, turned it over a few times and then ran it. They stayed stiff and were all quiet. Left it over night. Checked it in the morning. Still stiff. Came back an hour later...

Yeah, it would suck if it was the lifters, seeing as I replaced them to fix the issue. It seems unlikely but I guess it's possible. It's very likely they are Chinese.

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Yeah they looked fine, easy to remove and the new ones slid straight in. Moved them up and down by hand and they felt good. No binding or anything. Thanks.

OK thanks, yeah I didn't think 1/8 would make any difference.

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Just checking the preload again. Seems that some are about 7/8 of a turn past zero lash. Would this extra 1/8 of a turn past the maximum 3/4 be the issue? I could try shimming the bridges?
  9. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Oh, of course. I didn't think to check it that way on non adjustbles. Cheers, I'll check it out.

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Not sure how to do that, in my mind any preload should be fine on a hydraulic as long as it's not bottomed out. That's what I don't understand about the method.

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Some people suggest shaving down the rocker arm bridges as a cheap fix for this. Im wondering if this would make any sense if the lifters already have preload? Or will I just be giving them more preload? Is the idea that less travel would make it easier for them to pump up?
  12. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Nah I got a replacement set.
  13. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

It does it cold and warm. Comes and goes how bad it gets. Sometimes it's not too bad but never fully goes away like it used to.

I'm not convinced my pump is bad but could it be possible that even though it has enough pressure, it might need more flow? Old motor, bigger clearances, has pressure but just needs more flow? hi flow pump? Just a theory.
  15. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

I think my only options left are either a new pump, or try shaving down the rocker arm bridges a little. Or just, see how she goes.. haha.

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Good point, perhaps some are weaker then others.. it was a quick observation so im not sure, when they started shooting all over the car I stopped it hahaha.
  17. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

I did my best to, they didn't look bad to me. Nothing obvious. I'm thinking if I had a worn out cam that the noise would be consistant though aswell. I could be wrong though? The lifter noise seems to come and go on all of them.

Just remembered that hpr30 is actually 20w-60. But the problem started before that when I was using 20w50. I just changed it to the hpr to see if it would help. Also for the zinc.
  19. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Yeah, it's got the 3.3 stamp. It's a blue 12 port. I just didn't realise there was a difference. Still learning haha.
  20. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Ahh yeah I see. Hmm well I have only ever had 20w50 in it.
  21. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Oh ok I see. Well I have a 3.3 then. Interesting, everything I have seen so far regarding oil pressure seems to suggest thicker would increase pressure.
  22. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

I'm confused, you lost oil pressure with 20w-50? Also 202 and 3.3 are the same thing? I put in new lifters thinking it might be the old lifters. Its currently got penrite hpr30 full zinc 20w-50.

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

I dont have a tac but as far as pressure goes: Cold start with chock 56, running down the road warm 42, hot idle lowest is 14 It was better sounding today, only had a small tick. But it comes and goes. Just doesn't fully go.

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

A few revs with the rocker cover off and some of the pushrods are squirting oil all over the joint. Makes me pretty hesadent to buy a new pump.
  25. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Thanks that's good to know about the pump. Yeah not sure what's going on, it's the inconsistency that's doing my head in. Mine also used to only make noise for a few seconds when cold. Haha that's great about the lifters!
  26. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

    Yeah, reassembled 100% correctly.
  27. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Oil pressure seems solid, doesn't change at constant revs. Yeah trying to avoid swapping out the oil pump, probably have to buy a new one and I think I need to lift the engine to get it out. I don't have a crane. Yeah the push rods not spinning is concerning. Not sure how they could be too tight...

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Is there any thing that could cause the lifters to not fully pump up other then a bad pump? There is no play in anything and the lifters have pre load.
  29. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Well I would like to be able to adjust them, however I want to know what the issue is before throwing anymore money at it haha.
  30. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

No luck with the washer trick. I have 56 psi when it's cold. Gauge could be wrong but surely it should be enough. Still isn't consistent, sometimes it's 1 valve, sometimes it's 4. They just don't seem to want to pump up solid.
  31. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Well I'm going to give this a shot, it still has a little bit of the nipple sticking out to locate the spring.
  32. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

    Wow nice hahaha
  33. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Well the plug has a little nipple on the inside to locate the spring onto it so it stays in place. I was thinking that with a washer there the spring would not locate on that nipple and could maybe move enough for the washer to fall out. But I guess that would be unlikely. How thick of a washer...
  34. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Update, pushrods are definitely the same length and the lifters do have pre load on them.
  35. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Just to confirm firm, you put the washer between the spring and the plug? Is there a risk it might fall out and drop into the pump when running?
  36. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

That's sounds like a cool trick, I never heard of it. I don't know that it's not the pump for sure. Thanks.
  37. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Yeah will do. Is it just a matter of eyeballing the lifters to make sure they are not bottomed out at the the top? If they bottom out would that cause them to go soft? Thanks.
  38. D

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

I'm going to keep checking everything that I can when I get back at it tomorrow. My thought is that it surely can't be anything worn out or out of spec, otherwise I would think that it would be consistently the same lifters. I could be overlooking something though. The rods not spinning is a...

    Wb 202 noisy rockers/ lifters.

Yeah same stock length. Had the issue before changing them also.
