my daughter just traded her 2009 VE with 330,000km for a 4 wheel drive
this poor car towed a loaded horse float for 200,000km of its life
still on original chains,
5 speed auto was definitely not as good as new though

Mercedes, BMW, Maserati, VW.
They can deadset do your head in when performing even simple maintenance let alone major work.

They do it on 100% on purpose too. One of the Audi V6s requires you to remove the whole front of the engine down to the timing chains to replace the thermostat. You can’t tell me that’s not 100% by design to fuk over future owners down the track.

When you think about it though the ”prestige” marques have a vested interest in making sure their cars are disposed of as soon as possible. Having older banged up Audi’s, Mercedes, etc is unbecoming to the brand so the sooner they can send older vehicles off to the wreckers the better.

Too bad it’s a great engine. Anyone who bags it out about the timing chains clearly hasn’t been involved with the engines of other manufacturers.
ecotec, old design but so reliable good on fuel good torque.

Just replaced a holden trax 1.4l engine with 104000k on it head gasket gone another holden common **** problem.

Exactly. The problem is that one bad headline taints its image forever. The very early VEs did have dodgy timing chains but it was quickly rectified and most of them should have been replaced under warranty.

I got about 330,000kms out of my old SV6 before the transmission put it off the road, the engine was still going strong. The only non serviceable items I ever replaced on it were the starter motor, the coil packs, the water pump and the filler neck o rings.

Would much rather have an Alloytec than anything from the European marques, especially the complete fuking abortion that is Audi.

what about the leaky thermostats(**** job to fix and $$$$), sidi valves carbon up, sludged up PCV design fault, sidi oil burn issues.

I will second that !
Especially the Super6,
Easy and simple Items I have replaced on my Super6, [not in any order]

LIM Gaskets,
Various vac pipes/hoses, become brittle,
Exhaust manifolds bolts, a couple had snapped on the passengers side,
Exhaust manifold gaskets, replaced with exhaust extractor gaskets,

Apart from the usual service items,

It still gets up and goes ok at 202,000 k's
L/100k -
Around the burbs approx 13 > 15 [depending on traffic and my foot ;)]
Freeway approx 11 > 12
Freeway approx 9 > 10.

Not unique to Alloytec. This is typical of most engines now.

Also a motor that was impossible to meet evolving emissions targets.

Yes the thermostat is a bitch to get to but A) I never had to replace it in the whole time I owned my SV6 so the OEM thermostat was obviously a very good one and B) Holden never explicitly designed it that way just to fuk over owners, it just happened to be in that spot because the engine was originally designed for FWD applications.
