Sorry what lines inside ? There are none apart from the rubber return line that goes from the pump assembly plate to the bottom of the swirl pot. BTW if you fit the return line to the pump structure so that it feeds back in to the top of the swirl pot then you still have an issue with it feeding straight out of the return line port that's open to the tank.

Fuel in tank will slow most of it down from draining out & will still be fed from return hose up top...should not be an issue untill tank is low on fuel.

vk efi,vl & early vn have no swirl pot just just return up high in tank on drivers side.

If you look inside tank above swirlpot you will see what looks like plastic expansion tank....that is what lines from filler neck to top of fuel tank fittings...for pollution, overflow & pressurisation is my guess.

Have heard of people attaching return hose to feed pipe so it returns fuel from top.

Never done it but think that is how one of them are setup from factory looking at rare spares reproductions.

Other options are radiator mob to cut open & weld back together or get removable bulkhead fitted.

*** curious to know if anyone looks or notices the lines to plastic tank inside are perished or possible issues that may cause.
I have done this on a number of fuel pump replacements.

Attach the return hose to the sender arm so the end of the hose dumps onto the pump and drop it back into the pot in the tank.

Just found a couple of pics when I did this a few years ago.
First pic is how I found it when fuel pump was removed and hose was broken.

we spent a bit of time with the tank this afternoon after my daughter got home from school and she's findind that the fitting will not rotate in the swirl pot housing. She managed to undo the clamp with a spindle drive and from there I'll be able to slide the new hose on to the fitting with the clamp in place and at the right tension so that she can use the spindle drive again and just give it a few turns which will be enough for it to stay in place.

So at this stage progress is moving forward.

That's not the best idea as the fuel will come straight out at the bottom where the return line should be connected.

This would be a bit like pissing in a bucket that's got a hole in the bottom of it.

Job has now been completed and the tank is back in to our Acclaim. Everything works like it should and the car is now back on the road without any coughing and spluttering.

I had a look at my wagon which I did about 11 years ago and found that all the cheap breather hoses that are made of just clear PVC tubing have all perished and as such I've replaced all of those with 4mm (1/8th) fuel line which will outlast both the car and probably myself.

I can't believe that Holden used just standard clear PVC tubing for fuel orientated lines. I also changed the lines on the Sedan which were far fewer as the wagon has a whole swag of vapor lines opposed to the sedan.

Next job is to do this job all over again on my young lads VS Sedan which is still working as it should and is all original, but while my daughter can still reach inside the tanks of these cars I might as well do the procedure all over again in the name of preventative maintenance. I'll kick myself if we don't do it now and her hands get bigger.
