Success! Tried my M6 bolts again, but they weren't interested in going in at all. So I ran the M6 x 1.0 tap down the threads just to clean them up, and we're back in business... Again - thanks for the accurate replies, made my life much easier, greatly appreciated.

Agreed - either dirty connection or sticky dash needle. I've had both.
