At the end of the day its not a race car where you need to squeeze every last kw out of it. I would make them so its easy to work on the car. eg don't have to remove the manifolds to change spark plugs ect. just my 2 cents.

I see you have all ready done the job but thought i would reply anyway. Yes the old pump housing i took out had the sock on the outside. I replaced it with a full sender unit with a walbro 255 installed. Good to have conformation that the later ones have an internal strainer...

Well its states in the thread you linked that you need to "Connect the negative wire to BCM connector X4 terminal 22 which is white with a green tracer"

The reason i ask about the scan tool is that people see that the V6's have an OBD2 plug and assume that it is OBD2 protocol but in fact they use ALDL protocol with an OBD2 plug.
