1000 is too aggressive. Now do 2000. Then do 3000. Then hit it with the Precision platelet and you should have a different result.

You really want a medium speed. Try it with a microfibre pad. Then hit it again with a soft polishing foam pad and get the speed up but move quicker so it doesn’t heat too much.

Thanks Fu, I will give it a go with 2000 after I hit the rest with 1000. Can't get 3000 locally so will have to wait a week if the 2000 doesn't help.

Had a poke around in the shed and found a decent amount of 2000. I might grab one more sheet from True Value and buy a couple of sheets of 1200, rather than the 1000 I've been using. Hopefully I can get some better results on the polisher after using the 2000. If not then it will either be some more aggressive compound or wait until I can get some 3000, maybe from Autobarn, when I can get to Town, hopefully in the next few days, or early next week.
I probably should have given it some more thought and bought the 3000 at Autobarn. I thought 1000 might have been ok since the paint is heavily weathered. It was needed but because I was rushing as everyone was closing I didn't think about how much I'd need and what I'd really need.

Managed to get some 1500 and 2000 at True Value. They didn't have any 3000. Was going to get 1200 but that was $3.10 a sheet and the 1500 and 2000 was only $2.50 a sheet so bought two 1500s and one 2000. I will see how that goes. Hopefully get the wet rubbing done today.

Ok, so I had a think about this. And after some thinking I pulled out the finishing sander and some 400 white paper and went over the whole top of the boat. This worked a treat as it got all the rubbish off, smoothed it right up and gave me a good starting point to get into it with some 1500 wet rubbing.

Have now almost finished hitting it with 1500. I'm having a break as it not easy nor fun. I will get the 1500 done today and I may get the 2000 done as well or at least started. However, just hitting it with the sander made it look a lot better and cut down at least two hours work. Already most of the top feels like I have just clayed it, it's that smooth. I did consider trying a clay but I think the paint was too far gone for it to work.

Just finished doing the 1500. I'll now move onto the 2000. It feels so nice now, I just love rubbing my hands all over her. She is so smooth I could rub my whole body over her and it would feel so good. But that would be weird I think, or would it?

If it's the wife, quite natural

If it's the wife in the boat, how lucky are you

If it's the boat....Well, that's just out there...

Just got the top of the bow rubbed down with some 2000. Now to move onto the sides after tea and work my way to the inside.
