I should have asked the on the road price of the Corvette I sat in.

If @J..D2.0 or @keith reed can get to Llewellyn GMSV at Booval, they can sit and fiddle and ask the price, if it is still there.

A mate wanted to look at a Hyundai N i30 there. Wicked little machine with an array of bewildering dash touch screen settings for the suspension, steering, data logging, exhaust note, turbo over boost, and number of cup holders(?). Only demonstrators available, which probably was a good thing, because he will think about it now, rather than impulsively slapping down a deposit, and thinking later.
Sales guy was probably bored as he can't sell anything, that is why he invited us to look at the Corvette, to fill in time and look busy.

We have always paid more for imported goods, but for multiple reasons, conversion rates, wages, interest rates, numbers of vehicles sold per capita

The 2002 Corvette in the US goes for around $70k USD for the same spec we get here

Currently $70k USD = so around $110k AU, then add in $40k AUD for shipping, import duty and stamp duty, rego and stuff and it isn't really that bad

Historically typical to the 2004 Monaro, about $50k AUD new, and the 2004 Pontiac GTO for $32k USD

Meh, remeber about 5 years ago when a Mustang cost $150k AUD, then 1 year later about $80k AUD for the next model.....LOL, that made me laugh hard
The Corvette shouldn’t be any more expensive here than it is in the states after taking foreign exchange into account as it’s made in RHD on the production line.

Conversions after the fact are a different story and have a lot of additional costs involved. If it’s made from the ground up in LHD and RHD configurations the cost difference between the two would be negligible.

If your in the market for a sports car for around $150k AU a 2022 Corvette is great bang for your buck
My wife waiting the bus stop saw one yesterday, It was blue and she only had time to get a rear photo of it she loved it but I said Its made at GM.

You are spot on the money with regard the manufacturing. However, look at Govt taxe....sorry, "excises, import duties, backhanded payments to the minis".... ahhhhh, there I go again wandering off on a tangent. Then add "dealer needs to make a Profit" and suddenly we are **Not** on parody with our U.S. and Canadian cousins.

The GM Board are not living in that aforementioned river in Egypt though. They simply think us Punters are idiots who will be "brand loyal" no matter what they do. The way Aussies took to the LS1 and sporting "Chevy" grill symbols instead of our Lion made them think we would tolerate losing the Lion altogether. Especially after the Govt talked of stopping subsidies; you know, that plan where GM got paid twice for the same car, both times by the Punter in purchase price plus taxe...sorry, subsidies funded by the magical tree where Govt money actually comes from.

I will take every measure possible to limit how much of my money goes to the GM Board these days. I'd never buy a GM product new off the lot ever again, that's for certain. But I will still buy second hand Lions. Anyone know when I can steal an EH? ;)

My tuppence worth, FWIW.

Cheers,

US prices don’t list taxes on their MSRP. Down under we include all taxes and other costs in the recommended retail drive away price. So comparing apples and apples is a little more difficult.

US businesses make a profits on all their sales since they aren’t a charity (unless they are for tax minimisation reasons)… SSDD down under on this front…

Regardless, when apples and apples are actually compared, we are being raped on price, always have been  So yes, we are taken for mugs, idiots, for a ride…

Cheers,

One thing that always seems to be forgotten is the wages employees got paid for doing the simpliest and non-important tasks when building these GM cars within this country. Something as stupid as putting in some trim pieces like sunvisors and kick panels....

Back in 1994, the base wage was $900 per week and the company had employees starting on arvo shift, where the penality rates were paid ...ie tea money for the breaks etc etc....After being employed for 3 months, your wage went up.....(Can't remember the figure)To get onto morning shift, where those penality rates were non existant, was extremely difficult, as the long term employees had those, to match in with the normal persons working hours.

Not sure what the base wage was when the gov't ripped out the money tree, but one would suspect up around the $1,500 + mark....

So yup, the gov't is really to blame, along with all the back door deals that are being reported....

Thanks to Skylarking:

In Dec 2004 I bought a brand new GTO for $19,300. That was with a $10,000 rebate to the dealer from GM, who lost money on everyone they sold.

They deserved to

I don't see where @Ginger Beer wrote this ......
"In Dec 2004 I bought a brand new GTO for $19,300. That was with a $10,000 rebate to the dealer from GM, who lost money on everyone they sold"

When quoting somebody, at least get it correct. I am sure that Ginger Beer would have loved a new HSV GTO for $19,300 ........... but that didn't happen.
